Sunday brought a memorable moment to the Porto Open. Tunisian tennis player Moez Echargui secured the most important title of his career. He did it by dominating Italy’s Francesco Maestrelli in the final. This was a key match in the Portuguese Challenger circuit tournament, played on a hard court.
Echargui, currently ranked 312th in the world, defied expectations. He was up against Maestrelli, who holds the 178th spot in the ATP rankings. Maestrelli was also the sixth seed in the Porto event, making him the clear favorite. Yet, Echargui pulled off the upset. He won with scores of 6-3 and 6-2. The entire match lasted just one hour and 16 minutes.
This victory marked a significant turning point for the Tunisian player. At 32 years old, he reached a final on the secondary circuit for the very first time. Securing this trophy is the biggest achievement of his long career. On his path to the title, he also eliminated Portugal’s own Frederico Silva. That match took place in the round of 16.
