“Mission Impossible” fails to meet industry expectations for box office sales

After a globe-trotting ad campaign by star Tom Cruise, the film “Mission: Impossible – Reckoning Part One” posted the franchise’s best opening with $80 million for its first five days, albeit falling short of expectations the industry with a box office collection of 56.2 million dollars in the three days of the weekend.

The Paramount Pictures release was fueled by strong overseas earnings of $155 million from 70 markets. And while a $235 million international release marked one of the best world openings of the year, “Dead Reckoning” couldn’t come close to the blazing speed of last summer’s top film, “Top Gun: Maverick.”

“Dead Reckoning Part One,” the seventh film in the 27-year-old series, was expected to top the franchise-best opening achieved by the previous installment, “Fallout,” which started at $61 million domestically in 2018.

Instead, it also fell short of the $57.8 million that “Mission: Impossible II” debuted with in 2000.

That puts the film’s opening figure for the weekend very close to the tepid launch of Disney’s “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which opened in theaters in the United States and Canada to $82 million over five days. and 60 million over the three-day weekend. Paramount and Skydance had higher hopes for the action extravaganza of “Dead Reckoning,” which cost $290 million, not counting marketing expenses.
