The representatives of Venezuela, the United States and the Dominican Republic are the last finalists in the Miss Universe 2022 contest, which will culminate tonight in New Orleans (southern USA) with the election of the successor to Indian Harnaaz Sandhu, Miss Universe 2021. The new Miss Universe will be chosen between Amanda Dudamel, from Venezuela, R’Bonney Gabriel, from the USA, and Andreína Martínez Fournier, from the Dominican Republic. These three candidates came out of a preliminary group of 16 semifinalists, which also included candidates from Spain, Haiti, Australia, Laos, South Africa, Portugal, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Curaçao, India and Colombia. Then it was reduced to five with the three mentioned and Puerto Rico and Curaçao. The candidates to be the 71st Miss Universe were selected based on the scores obtained during parades in ball gowns and swimsuits at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in the city of New Orleans. The jury, made up of rapper and Hip-Hop singer Big Freedia, Cuban journalist and presenter Myrka Dellanos, Miss Universe 2010 Ximena Navarrete, from Mexico, Roku company executive Sweta Patel, Miss Universe 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam, the actress and journalist Emily Austin and the CEO and founder of O Skin Med Spa Olivia Quido, evaluated the finalists and later asked them a question and answer session. The first to answer was the Venezuelan Amanda Dudamel, who said that being able to “maintain myself as a designer, without listening to those who told me that it was impossible” has been the greatest challenge that she has faced and overcome in her life. For her part, Miss United States R’Bonney Gabriel indicated that she would ask the Miss Universe Organization to “increase the age of the candidates who can participate. I am 28 years old and it is the limit currently. My motto is ‘if not now, when’ and it is time that women are not defined by age”. Miss Dominican Republic Andreína Martínez is an activist in favor of equality and safe abortion. She said that the biggest obstacle for women in her country “is access to education.” To decide who will be the new Miss Universe and the order of the finalists, the three candidates must answer the same question. Before the semifinalists parade, the new owner of the Miss Universe Organization, the Thai billionaire Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, assured that this Saturday began “a new stage of Miss Universe, made by women for women” and recounted how she had “transformed pain ” of being rejected as a transgender woman on hits.
