Miracle Escape: USA Survives South Sudan Upset Bid as Carlik Jones Achieves Historic Triple-Double

United States Narrowly Escapes Upset Against South Sudan in Pre-Olympic Friendly

The United States men’s basketball team faced a stiff challenge from South Sudan in a pre-Olympic friendly, ultimately emerging with a 101-100 victory. The Africans, making their Olympic debut, pushed the Americans to the limit, with a late basket by LeBron James proving to be the difference.

Carlik Jones Shines for South Sudan

One of the standout performers for South Sudan was Carlik Jones, a 26-year-old point guard who was born in Cincinnati and naturalized South Sudanese. Jones finished the game with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists, becoming the first player in history to achieve a triple-double against the United States.

Jones’ International Debut

Jones made his international debut at last summer’s World Cup, where he averaged 20.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 10.6 assists, leading South Sudan to historic qualification for the Games.

Jones’ College and Professional Career

Jones studied at Radford University and later transferred to Louisville, where he averaged 16.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.4 steals. Despite his impressive college career, he went undrafted in 2021 and has since played in the G League and briefly in the NBA. He has also played in China and is expected to join Partizan in the Euroleague.

Coach Chris Mack’s Assessment

Jones’ former coach, Chris Mack, believes that the point guard has the talent to play in the NBA. "I’ve said since I coached him four years ago that Carlik Jones is a true NBA player and always has been," Mack said. "Triple-double against Team USA. That guy belongs in the NBA and I hope they realize that."
