Minister of Labor affirms fair wages and social protection are the best tool to redistribute wealth

The Minister of Labor of the Dominican Republic and president of the Ibero-American Social Security Organization (OISS), Luis Miguel De Camps García, affirmed that the countries of Ibero-America must continue to extend the coverage of systems that guarantee a decent life for workers.

De Camps stressed that the components of social security are the best tool for an effective distribution of the wealth generated by societies.

“It is precisely the informal workers who have the lowest coverage rates, since the poorest, in general, are protected by non-contributory social security regimes,” he added.

He stressed that at the most acute moment of the pandemic in the Dominican Republic, it was the Social Security system that responded to the need to protect workers’ wages, employment and health coverage.

“Our president, Luis Abinader, designed and implemented assistance programs for informal workers that guaranteed a minimum income for those workers who were not part of the Social Security registration system,” said De Camps.

He argued that the great challenge for Ibero-America is to formalize work from a multidimensional perspective that has the worker and their needs at the center.

This first forum of the First Forum on the challenges of labor formalization in Ibero-America, organized by the OISS, seeks to contribute to increasing labor formalization and affiliation to social security systems, as well as identifying measures to reduce labor informality.

Ministers of Labor from Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Spain, Panama, Paraguay, Costa Rica and Portugal participate in this forum, as well as executives from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean(ECLAC)of the International Labor Organization(ILO)and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD).
