Minister Juan Castillo Visits Yazaki Plant in Las Piedras Amid Uncertainty

Juan Castillo, the future Minister of Labor and Social Security, recently visited the Yazaki plant in Las Piedras, accompanied by Marcelo Pereira, the mayor of Canelones. During the visit, they met with workers from the Japanese company to discuss the current situation. Castillo expressed his solidarity with the workers and assured them that he is available to maintain open dialogue channels to find solutions to the company’s situation as quickly as possible.

Castillo stated that the company has limited options for reopening, and the decision to leave the country has already been made. He described the measures that can be taken at this stage as temporary solutions. The future minister mentioned the importance of correct liquidation, paying off all debts, and the possibility of special unemployment insurance. He also emphasized the need to prepare workers to re-enter the labor market.

According to Castillo, Yazaki received benefits to establish itself in the country and operated for years before deciding to leave, resulting in significant job losses in cities like Colonia and Las Piedras. The mayor of Canelones, Marcelo Pereira, recalled an agreement with Yazaki to hand over the property by July. Pereira noted that the facilities will be used for staff training, and the municipality will collaborate in this effort. Furthermore, when new businesses are established in the department, priority will be given to hiring workers who were dismissed by Yazaki.
