For the first time in a decade, perceptions of corruption in Europe are worsening
The Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2023 reflects that judicial independence is lacking in countries such as Spain, Sweden, Ireland and Lithuania. And he advocates restoring the proper functioning of the institutions, for example through the renewal of the CGPJ and the implementation of institutional reforms.
Looking at the rest of the world Spain falls back and moves from 36th to 37th place out of a total of 180 placesa decline that has been repeated since 2019 and puts countries like Israel, Lithuania or Portugal ahead of us in terms of transparency.
Denmark tops the list for the sixth consecutive year, followed by Finland, New Zealand, Norway and Singapore. The most significant improvements over the last 10 years include Uzbekistan (+15 points), Tanzania (+10), Ukraine (+10), Ivory Coast (+8), and the Dominican Republic and Kuwait (+7).
Two out of three countries are failing to combat corruption in an increasingly violent world
Of the 180 countries analyzed, 23 have reached their lowest levels in their history. What is striking is that some of them are at the top of the table, such as Sweden, the Netherlands, Iceland and the United Kingdom, which has worsened by 5 points since Brexit. And in terms of transparency, Somalia, Venezuela, Syria, South Sudan, Yemen and North Korea follow.
