Millán Takes Helm of Rowing Federation Amid Leadership Shake-Up

Leadership Change in Spanish Rowing Federation

Miguel Ángel Millán, a native of Seville, has been provisionally proclaimed the new president of the Spanish Rowing Federation (FER) for the 2024-2028 cycle. This decision was made by the General Assembly, where Millán secured the majority vote, surpassing the incumbent president, Asunción Loriente, by 15 votes.

Candidate Support and Voting Results

Millán’s candidacy was supported by 27 assembly members, while Loriente had 25 supporters, and Víctor Canal, president of the Cantabria federation, had 14 supporters before withdrawing his candidacy. In the end, Millán received 44 votes, while Loriente secured 29 votes.

Postponement of the General Assembly

The General Assembly was initially scheduled to elect a new president on November 24, 2024. However, the vote was postponed after the Sports Administrative Court (TAD) ordered a repeat of the vote to form the new assembly in the DAN athletes’ establishment in Valencia, upholding an appeal presented by one of the candidates.

New President’s Background

Miguel Ángel Millán Carrascosa, a lawyer by profession, previously led the territorial federation of Andalusia for four years. During his tenure, he claims to have achieved economic, sporting, and institutional growth. He bid farewell to Andalusian rowing at the end of November last year.

Impact on Olympic Federations

The change in leadership at the FER means that Elisa Aguilar is now the only woman at the head of an Olympic federation. Aguilar was re-elected on May 7 for the 2024-2028 cycle, having taken over the position in October 2023, replacing Jorge Garbajosa, who is now the president of FIFA Europe.
