Milei dismisses 7,000 state employees by decree

“The competent authorities of each jurisdiction (…) are directed to carry out, within the time limit set out in the above article, a comprehensive survey of the contractual staff whose entry into administration is before January 1, 2023 in order to assess the renewal of the above-mentioned contracts” , he remarked.

If the authorities decide to extend certain contracts, they must justify the decision by demonstrating the need to preserve the jobs in question, he added.

Exceptions

The decree exempts hiring resulting from statutory quotas or other special protection measures from the reduction. In this case, for example, the legally required employment quota for trans people would be included.

In addition, workers who entered the state before January 1, 2023 and changed their contract type, as well as those who carry out work essential to the functioning of the respective jurisdiction, according to the criteria of the heads of each company, are protected restrictively and well-founded, and their continuity is necessary “for urgent operational reasons”.

In its justification, the official document recalls that the reduction is made on the basis of the Decree on Necessity and Urgency, which changed the national structure and reduced the number of ministries from 18 to eight.

“An organic restructuring has been carried out with the aim of optimizing resources, which requires a review of all these contracts (…). This measure is in line with these objectives and with the aim of achieving better functioning of public administration,” he explained.
