Some great news came out of Rome this Friday. AS Roma officially announced that their Serbian international goalkeeper, Mile Svilar, has signed a new deal. This fresh contract will keep him with the Giallorossi until June 2030. That’s a five-year extension, folks. It shows just how much the club believes in their man between the posts.
Roma was clearly thrilled to share the news. They highlighted that Svilar, born in 1999, was a key player in their recent season. He really stepped up and made a name for himself. The club noted he kept an impressive 16 clean sheets in the league. That kind of performance doesn’t go unnoticed, and it earned him some major praise.
In fact, the 25-year-old shot-stopper had a truly standout year. For the 2024/25 season, Svilar was even named the best goalkeeper in Serie A. That’s a huge achievement for any player. He has now worn the famous Roma jersey 88 times since joining the team.
It’s a remarkable journey for Svilar. He arrived at Roma for the 2022/23 season. Before that, he spent five years at Benfica. His time in Lisbon wasn’t quite as bright. He rarely got a chance to shine with the main squad, playing just 23 first-team games. He saw more action with Benfica’s B team, making 56 appearances there.
Svilar, who was born in Antwerp, started his football career early. He came up through the youth ranks at Anderlecht, a well-known club. He stayed with Anderlecht until the 2016/17 season, right before he made the big move to Portugal. His path shows that sometimes, you just need the right place and the right moment to truly explode onto the scene.
