Microsoft Explains Why Many Windows Updates Fail

If you have a Windows computer, chances are you’ve had trouble downloading and installing a software update every now and then.

Apparently, Windows computers must be connected for at least eight hours so that software updates received by Windows Update install correctly.

Ah yes David Guyer explainedMicrosoft Program Manager for Windows Updates.

One of the most impactful things we explored was how long a device needs to be on and connected to Windows Update to successfully install quality and feature updates.

What we’ve found is that devices that don’t meet a certain amount of connection time have very little chance of being successfully updated.

Specifically, the data show that devices require a minimum of two hours of continuous connection and six total hours of connection after downloading the update, to be able to update reliably.

This allows for successful downloads and background installations that can be restarted or resumed once the device is active and connected.

Microsoft has redesigned cumulative updates in Windows 11 to allow security and quality updates to install faster as they are about 40% smaller than their Windows 10 counterparts.
