Microsoft and Tomtom have developed an AI voice assistant for vehicles

TomTom, a specialist in digital maps and location technology, has developed one in collaboration with Microsoft Voice assistant with artificial intelligence for vehicles.

This assistant developed by the Netherlands-based company makes this possible Voice interaction with location search, entertainment and vehicle command systems.

What does this mean for drivers? You can “chat” with the vehicle, ask questions about navigation instructions or stops along the route and use voice control to regulate the temperature, open the windows or change the radio station.

The AI assistant uses several Microsoft products, such as Azure OpenAI Service, Azure Kubernetes Services, Azure Cosmos DB and Azure Cognitive Services. It is already integrated into TomTom’s Digital Cockpit, the company’s in-flight entertainment platform, but can also be integrated into other in-car entertainment systems.

TomTom, which competes with Google Maps and offers a European alternative to Google’s digital mapping services, has worked with Microsoft since 2016, when the company began providing Azure Maps location services.

“Together with Microsoft, our shared vision is to drive innovation with generative artificial intelligence and offer our customers even better solutions.”said Mike Schoofs, General Manager of TomTom.

In July, TomTom became the first company of its kind to release a plugin for ChatGPT. This allows developers to add AI-based navigation features to their apps, while drivers can interact with the LLM for location search, route guidance and traffic information.
