It was not a surprise but it is now official. Michael keaton, the Vulture from Spider-Man: Homecoming, will be back in the movie Morbius of Daniel Espinosa. If his comeback had been teased in the film’s first trailer, released in January 2020, there was still a slight suspense about the exact nature of his role. Given this capacity of the MCU to largely fool us (the fake multiverse in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the fake Quicksilver from WandaVision), we had to wait for a confirmation from the main interested party who arrived at the time of a meeting between the latter and the Hollywood Reporter.
Michael keaton however explained that he had no idea how his character was going to land in the universe. Sony and how the world of MCU and the world Sony of Morbius, Venom and Carnage were going to be able to agree together:
“I was nodding like I knew what they were talking about [Marvel]. I was like ‘Uh-huh.’ And I was like, “You might as well explain quantum physics to me right now. All I know is I just know my character. And I know the basics. ” So then they looked at me and laughed. They said, “You don’t know what we’re talking about, do you? I said, ‘No, I don’t know, I have no idea what you are talking about.’ ”
Such speech can have several meanings. Given that Morbius comes after Loki, we can also assume that the multiverse will allow bridges between these two universes, unless Morbius, Spider-Man, Venom and Vulture evolve on the same planet, from the beginning. In this specific case, and as previously announced, the character could serve as a gateway to introduce the Sinisters Six, especially since a film Kraven headed by JC Chandor is also planned by Sony. Adrian Toomes could lead Sinisters Six New Look without Venom and Morbius (considered anti-heroes and not villains) but probably with Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) or Scorpion (Michael Mando).
If one is sure of something however, it is that the character could only appear in the form of a cameo, responsible for teasing the Sinisters Six in the near future. Morbius might simply refuse to be part of this group of villains to sail alone. Morbius is expected to be released in the United States on January 28, 2022, after being delayed several times due to global health circumstances. Venom: Let There Be Carnage now slated to hit theaters in the US October 15, 2021, having also suffered several delays.
