Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has been named the new head coach of USA Basketball, a long-term appointment that will see him lead the national team through the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
Spoelstra called the appointment an “immense honor,” stating that representing the country and coaching world-class athletes is “one of the great privileges in sports.” He added he looks forward to continuing the “tradition of excellence and teamwork that defines USA Basketball.”
The US Basketball Federation announced Spoelstra’s selection on Tuesday.
His tenure will include guiding the national team at the 2027 World Cup in Doha, Qatar, and the highly anticipated 2028 Olympic Games on home soil in Los Angeles.
The 54-year-old coach has previous experience with the national program, having served as an assistant coach for the US Olympic team preparing for Paris 2024. He also assisted Steve Kerr for the squad that finished fourth at the 2023 World Cup.
Spoelstra has a decorated NBA career, leading the Miami Heat to two championships as head coach in 2012 and 2013. He also earned an NBA title as an assistant coach with the Heat in 2006.
