Mexico’s Mega Water Cuts: When Will Service Return

Water Cuts in Guadalajara: A Necessary Step Towards Improvement

In an effort to address the water supply issues in various regions of Mexico, the Jalisco government has announced two major water cuts in the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara. The first cut took place from November 15 to November 18, affecting 193 neighborhoods, while the second cut started on November 22, impacting 873 neighborhoods in four municipalities.

Reconnection of Water Supply System Underway

The State Executive has reported that the recent work focused on reconnecting the water supply system of Chapala with the urban networks, following the successful linkage of the El Zapotillo Dam to the Water Treatment Plant Number 3. This phase is crucial in increasing the availability of water in the city.

Minimal Impact and Progressing Recovery

According to the government’s social media announcement, the impacts on water supply were minimal, and at 60%, full recovery is progressing as anticipated. The authorities have guaranteed that “there is very little left to recover 100% both the volume and pressure of the water” in the over 800 neighborhoods affected by the works.

Timeline of the Water Outage

The second large-scale water cut in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area began on Friday, November 22, at 7:00 in the morning, as announced by SIAPA. This cut is related to the operational tasks of incorporating equipment into the region’s water supply system, particularly those that link the old Chapala system with the Las Pintas pumping plant.

Progressive Recovery of Water Supply

The cut is expected to continue until Monday, November 25, with a progressive recovery of the water supply to the impacted neighborhoods, as projected by the authorities. This means that various areas of the city will once again experience a lack of service, which could cause problems for residents of the metropolis.

Electromechanical Operations Underway

Starting at 07:00 on Friday, November 22, SIAPA employees began electromechanical operations to place valves and pumping devices in key locations such as the old Chapala system and the Las Pintas pumping factory. These procedures will ensure the supply of water from the new supply sources to the ZMG colonies.

Normalization of Water Supply

According to SIAPA, the supply began to progressively normalize starting Saturday, November 23. However, the complete restoration is expected to occur on the night of Monday, November 25, after completing the technical tests necessary to ensure the correct functioning of the system.

A Historic Investment in Water Infrastructure

With a historic investment of billions of pesos in the last semester, the management highlighted that Jalisco has managed to execute projects that had been paralyzed for decades, signaling a turning point in water administration for the entity.

A Solid Infrastructure for Decades to Come

Once the work is completed, the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area will have a solid infrastructure that will guarantee water supply for decades to come. This success places the city as a benchmark in water planning and administration in the nation.

Commitment to Keeping the Population Informed

The authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the population informed and reducing inconvenience during the final days of the mega outage, as they are convinced that this teamwork will be essential for the sustainable progress of the region.
