Mexico studies a possible case of the omicron variant in a man from South Africa

Mexican authorities are studying a possible case of the omicron variant of coronavirus in a man from South Africa who has been hospitalized in Mexico City, as confirmed this Friday by the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in his daily press conference, known as ‘La Mañanera’, which takes place in the Treasury Room of the National Palace.

"Apparently there is a Mexican citizen who was in South Africa and is admitted to a private hospital with symptoms of COVID-19", López Obrador explained.

The Institute for Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) already reported this Tuesday of the possible presence of the omicron variant of coronavirus, but it has yet to be confirmed. As reported by the Mexican president, the suspected patient "it’s not serious" and has "good health".

"You had that concern. It is very likely that this new variant will be presented in the country", according to the newspaper ‘Milenio’. However, López Obrador declared on Monday that there is no "risk" So what "we should not be scared" before its possible expansion.

Mexico announced this Tuesday that it will inoculate a third booster dose against the coronavirus to the elderly and teachers in the middle of a vaccination campaign in adolescents and children to prevent community contagion of the omicron variant.

The Mexican health authorities have registered more than 3.8 million cases of COVID-19, including almost 294,000 fatalities.
