México Invests $20 Billion in Green Hydrogen Production Underway

México is on the cusp of a green hydrogen revolution. With 16 projects underway, worth $20 billion, the country is poised to become a key player in the global hydrogen market.

This isn’t just about the economy – it’s about the environment too. Green hydrogen is made using renewable energy, like solar and wind power. That means no carbon emissions are released during production.

In a world scrambling to find climate solutions, green hydrogen is a crucial alternative for industries like steel, cement, and oil refining. These sectors are big CO₂ emitters, but green hydrogen can help change that.

A study by EMR and the Mexican Hydrogen and Sustainable Mobility Association (AMH2) highlights the country’s unique chance to become a major hydrogen producer and exporter. However, there are challenges to overcome.

The lack of clear policies and incentives is a major hurdle. Israel Hurtado, AMH2’s president, says a national hydrogen policy with tax breaks and subsidies could attract more investors.

México has plenty of natural resources – sunshine, wind, and geothermal energy – making it an ideal spot for green hydrogen production. The existing natural gas infrastructure could also be used to transport and store hydrogen, saving time and money.

Collaboration with countries like Denmark, which is already advanced in hydrogen production, could also help México. By working together, the country can tap into existing knowledge and technology, making its own hydrogen industry more viable.

But to make this vision a reality, México needs a clear regulatory framework. This will guide investments, ensure projects meet safety and efficiency standards, and create technical standards for green hydrogen production and transport.
