Electricity theft is a widespread issue in Mexico, causing significant losses for the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and unfairly burdening families who pay their bills in full. To combat this problem, the CFE has joined forces with the National Guard to launch a crackdown on the use of illegal devices that tamper with electricity meters.
These devices, known as “diablitos,” are used to alter the meter’s reading, resulting in lower electricity bills. However, they are not only illegal but also pose a significant risk to households. If not installed correctly, they can cause a short circuit, damage the electrical installation, or even trigger a fire. Moreover, they can alter the voltage of electrical equipment, causing damage or malfunction.
The CFE and the National Guard will begin their operations in the municipalities of Tamaulipas, including Tampico, Reynosa, Matamoros, and RÃo Bravo. The authorities will conduct surprise visits to households suspected of using these devices, and if found, the CFE will suspend the electricity service, and the user may face imprisonment ranging from 3 to 10 years.
The CFE warns that the use of diablitos can have severe consequences, including electrical shocks, fires, and damage to appliances. Instead, the commission recommends implementing energy-saving measures, such as using energy-efficient light bulbs, turning off lights and appliances when not in use, and regulating air conditioning temperatures.
By working together, the CFE and the National Guard aim to reduce electricity theft and ensure a fair and safe electricity supply for all users. The operation will be extended to other regions of Tamaulipas to prevent the spread of this illegal practice.
How Electricity Theft Affects Everyone
Electricity theft not only affects the CFE’s finances but also has a broader impact on the community. When some users cheat the system, others are left to pick up the tab. This can lead to higher electricity bills for honest users, as the CFE tries to recover its losses.
Moreover, electricity theft can cause power outages, damage to electrical infrastructure, and even pose a risk to public safety. By reporting suspicious activity and using energy-efficient practices, users can help prevent electricity theft and ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply.
Tips for Saving Energy
The CFE offers several tips for saving energy and reducing electricity bills. These include:
- Using energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances
- Turning off lights, TVs, and computers when not in use
- Regulating air conditioning temperatures to avoid excessive energy consumption
- Verifying electrical connections to prevent energy leaks
By following these simple tips, users can save energy, reduce their bills, and help prevent electricity theft. The CFE encourages all users to take an active role in promoting energy efficiency and fairness in the electricity supply system.
