Mexico City boss Claudia Sheinbaum to resign

Mexico City (BLAZETRENDS).- The head of the Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced that she will resign next Friday to seek the candidacy for the Presidency in the 2024 elections of the ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena).

“Today I want to inform you that I have made the decision to separate myself from office permanently on June 16 of this (year) in order to become the first woman in the history of Mexico to lead the destinies of the nation ”, the president, considered the favorite, expressed in a message to the media.

The announcement comes after Morena, founded by current Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, announced on Sunday that on September 6 it will reveal who will be the party’s candidate after opinion polls that will be held from August 28 to September 3.

Sheinbaum explained that, although he had initially expressed that he would not resign from his post, following the rules imposed by the party for the presidential candidate election process, he decided to leave his position.

“I understand that above all else is the transformation project and therefore I will respect everything that was approved yesterday (Sunday) by the National Council,” he emphasized.

Continuity of the legacy of López Obrador

The still president of the capital said that in her project she will seek to give “continuity with her own seal” to the Fourth Transformation initiated by President López Obrador in December 2018.

Likewise, he considered that he is “the only person” who will be in the Morena survey who comes from a scientific career and who has participated in the fight for the rights of the people of Mexico, “democracy, freedoms, social and environmental justice , women’s rights since I was only 15 years old”.

She stressed that her way of governing Mexico City so far has led to her being in first place in preference polls and that she is “sure that it will continue to be so.”

He recalled that according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), 67.5% of Mexicans “are very willing” to have a female president.

In the same way, he affirmed that next Thursday at 4:00 p.m. local time (22:00 GMT) he will hold a citizen meeting where he will present what has been done in Mexico City during this period at the emblematic Monument to the Revolution, in the center of the capital.

The president exalted what has been achieved in just over five years as head of Mexico City, where she highlighted the basic education scholarships, maintenance and investment in the subway, as well as the construction of seven high schools, two universities and two new hospitals.

In addition, he highlighted achievements in mobility with investment in public transport and care for women victims of violence.

Although he did not designate who will take his place, he guaranteed the city’s inhabitants that “a first-class government team” remains.

During his government, Sheinbaum experienced various controversies, such as the accident that occurred on metro line 12 in May 2021 that left 27 dead and hundreds injured, and the lack of care for those affected by the 2017 earthquakes that left them homeless. to hundreds of families in the south of the city.

Next Monday the political tours of the country will begin with each of the four party candidates: Claudia Sheinbaum, the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Marcelo Ebrard; the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, and the leader of Morena in the Senate, Ricardo Monreal.
