A devastating explosion and subsequent fire at a supermarket in Hermosillo, Mexico, has killed at least 23 people and injured dozens, according to authorities.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fatalities were primarily caused by the inhalation of toxic gases, Sonora Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez stated.
Salas Chávez confirmed that children are among the deceased. The Mexican Red Cross had earlier reported the death toll.
The Attorney General also noted there were no signs suggesting the fire was intentionally set. “At this moment, we have no indications that lead us to presume that the fire was intentional,” he said.
Dozens of people were injured in the blast and fire. They have been transported to six different hospitals across Hermosillo, the capital of Sonora state.
The incident occurred at a Waldo’s supermarket. A social media post from a local journalist suggested a presumed explosion in a CFE transformer.
