Meta’s conversational AI is finally arriving in Europe. This means WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook users will soon see a new button to chat with the AI, similar to ChatGPT. The rollout has already started, but it may take a few days for everyone to get access.
The Meta AI button will appear as a small blue circle. It will be available in six European languages. To use it, simply type “@MetaAI” followed by your question in a group chat.
Here’s how it works:
- The AI can answer specific questions using online information.
- It will first be available on WhatsApp, then on Instagram and Facebook Messenger.
- Using Meta AI is optional, and it will only appear in group chats if a participant decides to use it.
- The chat appearance will change to differentiate it from regular conversations.
- End-to-end encryption will still be maintained, and Meta won’t be able to read your messages or listen to your calls.
Meta AI can help with planning group trips, generating ideas for dinner, or simply adding fun to your chats. Later, it may also be used to adjust Instagram’s algorithm to your preferences.
However, Meta hasn’t confirmed if image-related features, such as generating or editing images, will be available in Europe. This might be due to the European regulatory framework or just a phase of adaptation.
The company has faced issues with the European regulation, which has delayed the launch of Meta AI in Europe. The European Parliament approved the world’s first AI law last year, and Meta had to navigate this complex regulatory system. The company had planned to launch Meta AI in Europe in 2023 but faced obstacles, including a request from the Irish Data Protection Commission to delay training on user-published content.
