Messi Extends Inter Miami Contract Until 2028, Targets MLS Title and World Cup

Lionel Messi has extended his contract with Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami through December 2028, signaling a deeper commitment to North American football that could align with the 2026 World Cup and his future beyond playing.

The extension secures the Argentine international’s presence with the Florida club until he turns 41. His previous agreement was set to expire at the end of this year.

This move positions Messi for a potential appearance at the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico. Argentina is the reigning world champion.

While the contract increases the likelihood, Messi has not yet guaranteed his participation in the global tournament.

Inter Miami formally announced the extension on Thursday.

The extended agreement also ensures Messi will be with the club for the anticipated inauguration of its new home, Freedom Park. The new stadium is slated to open in the first half of next year.

The announcement video for the renewal shows Messi signing documents at the still-under-construction venue, on the future pitch.

Over the next three years, Messi will also continue his pursuit of an MLS title, a championship he has not yet secured with Inter Miami.

Speculation surrounds his future beyond playing. Messi is a shareholder in the Florida-based club, leading to suggestions he could assume an executive role there. Alternatively, a return to Barcelona in a non-playing capacity remains a possibility.
