Messi Effect: Barcelona will lose €137 million

Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona will have a very clear blow on football, which Dutch coach Ronald Koeman will try to mitigate with the arrival of Memphis Depay, the recovery of Ansu Fati, the consolidation of Antoine Griezmann and the eventual recovery of Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho. But it will also have a tremendous impact on the Catalan club’s fallen coffers: a study estimates that the entity presided over by Joan Laporta will lose around 137 million euros with the star’s departure.

According to an estimate presented by consultancy Brand Finance, Barcelona will lose up to 137 million euros due to the negative impact of the star’s departure and its current valuation of the business will be reduced by 11 percent. Of the total volume of losses, around 77 million would correspond to the reduction of commercial contracts and another 43 to the drop in the sale of t-shirts and other products in the market, says an article reproduced by the newspaper Sport. A third reduction concept would be revenue per game day, which was projected to drop by 17 million.

According to the “Brand Finance Football 50 2021” report, Barcelona is the second most valuable football club brand in the world (1,266 million), surpassed only by Real Madrid (1,276 million).
