Mercedes-Benz Vision Iconic: Retro Design Meets Electric, AI-Driven Future

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled an electric concept coupé, the Vision Iconic, that marries the opulent design cues of 1930s luxury vehicles with advanced autonomous driving and artificial intelligence capabilities. The two-door model showcases a bold reinterpretation of classic Mercedes aesthetics while introducing groundbreaking technological features aimed at future mobility.

A key innovation is the Vision Iconic’s Level 4 autonomy, designed for hands-off and eyes-off driving. This advanced driver assistance system can also independently park the vehicle, directing itself to a spot after dropping off occupants.

This capability is powered by neuromorphic computing, which utilizes artificial neural networks to mimic the human brain’s processing. Mercedes-Benz states this system can handle complex information more efficiently than current computers, potentially reducing energy consumption for automated driving data processing by 90 percent.

The vehicle also integrates an artificial intelligence companion directly into one of four dashboard clocks, shaped like the Mercedes-Benz logo. Furthermore, the Vision Iconic features a steer-by-wire system, meaning the steering wheel is not physically connected to the front wheels.

Externally, the concept is coated in a black solar paint, which Mercedes-Benz says can be applied as a thin paste. The integrated solar cells boast an efficiency of 20 percent, comparable to many commercially available consumer solar panels.

The design pays homage to the brand’s heritage, with a long, elegant form reminiscent of pre-war grand tourers. Its prominent front grille reinterprets the legendary vertical grilles of classic models like the W111 and 600 Pullman. The rear design draws inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.

Inside, the coupé features an Art Deco-inspired “Zeppelin” floating glass structure. The instrument panel initiates a cinematic, fully analog animation when a door opens. The four-spoke steering wheel evokes luxury limousines of the 1930s, with the Mercedes-Benz logo floating within a glass sphere.

Despite its impressive features, the Vision Iconic remains a concept car. Mercedes-Benz has not indicated whether a production model with these specific looks and technologies will eventually reach the road.
