MEPs want to make bee protection a “great national cause” in 2022

The adopted resolution encourages “the government to reflect on the development of a national plan to combat the Asian hornet”, a predator largely responsible for “the disappearance of nearly 30% of bee colonies each year”.

They unanimously adopted a resolution to this effect on Thursday, October 7. The National Assembly called on the government to make the protection of bees, seriously threatened by insecticides, diseases and the proliferation of the Asian hornet, a “great national cause” in 2022.

The non-binding resolution was presented by the LR group as part of its so-called “niche” day, reserved for a minority group. The author of the resolution, MP and beekeeper Robert Therry, stressed that this fight was “a necessity for the survival of our ecosystem”, in addition to the economic weight of the sector.

This resolution encourages in particular “the government to reflect on the development of a national plan to fight against the Asian hornet”, predator largely responsible for “the disappearance of nearly 30% of bee colonies each year”.

At the end of 2020, a law authorized the temporary return of neonicotinoids, insecticides that are also harmful to bees. The text authorizes by way of derogation sugar beet growers to use seeds treated with these “bee-killing” pesticides until 2023, while they have been banned since 2018.

The Secretary of State for Biodiversity, Bérangère Abba, for her part, highlighted the measures developed as part of the plan in favor of pollinating insects and pollination to halt this decline. “This action plan is there, it is ready to be implemented”, she declared, stressing the “driving” role of France in this area.
