They’re turning a corner in Barcelona’s La Maquinista store with a 10-square-meter space dedicated to pre-loved gadgets. This bold experiment is part of MediaMarkt’s “Space-as-a-Service” initiative, offering merchants a platform to showcase their wares.
The selection includes 12 refurbished devices, carefully graded as “excellent,” “very good,” or “good.” This straightforward labeling lets customers compare and make informed purchasing decisions. Marta Gutiérrez, MediaMarkt Spain’s Marketplace lead, emphasizes that refurbished tech is a core focus for the company, driven by a desire to make technology more accessible and eco-friendly. “By taking this online concept offline, we’re enhancing the customer experience and bringing it closer to our clients,” she says.
For Alex Guardia, AlexPhone’s co-founder, this partnership marks a seismic shift in perceptions around refurbished devices. “This collaboration is more than just a commercial milestone – it’s a cultural transformation. For years, refurbished tech was seen as a second-best option. Today, we’re presenting it as what it truly is: a smart, sustainable choice with guarantees.”
Sustainable Tech Services
MediaMarkt is doubling down on sustainability and circular economy efforts. Existing services include:

- Tech rental options with Grover
- Comprehensive repair services at their Technology Center in Pinto and in-store service points
In 2024, MediaMarkt Spain completed around 400,000 repairs and sold approximately 24,000 products. Their catalog now boasts over 800 sustainable products – more than 20% of total sales – which use less energy or resources compared to similar products. This commitment to eco-friendly tech is poised to make a lasting impact.
