Media Capital buys newspapers Nascer do Sol and i for 1 euro

Sometimes in the world of big business, just like in sports, you see a deal that makes you do a double-take. Imagine acquiring a valuable asset, a piece of history, for the price of a single euro coin. That’s exactly what went down this Thursday, according to official company word sent to the Market Securities Commission. Media Capital, a major player in the media game, secured almost 100% of Newsplex. This company holds the reins of well-known newspapers like Nascer do Sol and i.

It wasn’t just a quiet handshake. The Media Capital Group, SGPS, S.A. (known simply as Media Capital) put out a statement. It confirmed a share purchase agreement was signed. Their fully-owned company, Meglo – Media Capital Global, SGPS, S.A., is the direct buyer. This move gets them a 98.21% stake in Newsplex, S.A. Newsplex, for those keeping score, operates in the written press sector. They publish “Nascer do Sol” and “Jornal I.” This big change will be effective starting August 1, 2025.

So, why the symbolic euro? The owner of TVI and CNN Portugal explained the price. The acquisition price for Newsplex, S.A., was indeed one euro. But there’s a catch, much like a star player coming with a hefty salary. Media Capital is taking on Newsplex’s responsibilities. This includes all its dues to the Tax Authority and Social Security. It’s a classic move: a small price upfront, but significant obligations down the line.

To steer these newly acquired publications, Media Capital has brought in a familiar face. The company announcement confirmed that Mário Ramires will take over. He’s been named the general director for both Nascer do Sol and i. It’s like bringing in a new coach to lead a team with a long legacy.
