McKinstry homers with three RBIs, Cubs beat Cardinals

Zach McKinstry homered and drove in three runs to help the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 on Wednesday.

Nico Hoerner had three hits for Chicago, while Brazilian Yan Gomes drove in two runs. Rowan Wick (4-6) got five outs for the win, leading a strong performance from the Cubs’ bullpen.

Lars Nootbaar homered for NL Central leader St. Louis, while Corey Dickerson went 4-for-4.

The Cardinals fell to 17-5 in August.

Chicago and St. Louis split wins in the first four games of their unlikely five-game series, which ends Thursday afternoon.

The defeat went to Miles Mikolas (10-10).

For the Cardinals, the Dominican Albert Pujols 4-1. Puerto Rican Yadier Molina 4-0.

For the Cubs, Dominican Franmil Reyes 4-1. The Venezuelan Rafael Ortega 3-2.
