A Selfless Act in the Dakar Rally
In the midst of a challenging Dakar Rally, Cristina Gutierrez made a remarkable decision that showcased her dedication to her team. Despite being in a strong position, she chose to sacrifice her own chances of success to support her teammates, Nasser Al-Attiyah and Sebastien Loeb.
Gutierrez’s selfless act was a testament to the importance of teamwork in the rally. By putting the needs of her teammates ahead of her own, she demonstrated a level of commitment and camaraderie that is rare in competitive sports.
A Team Effort
Tiphanie Isnard, the team principal of Dacia, explained the reasoning behind the decision to sacrifice Gutierrez’s chances. “We decided to start the stage with caution due to the rocky terrain and the possibility of many punctures. Our drivers have been very careful and have reached remote assistance almost without damage.”
Isnard also praised Gutierrez for her selfless act, saying, “We thank her for accepting the decision and luckily she has managed to reach the same camp as them.” The team’s decision to prioritize Loeb’s chances over Gutierrez’s own aspirations is a testament to the importance of teamwork in the rally.
A McGyver in the Team
Gutierrez herself explained the events of the stage, saying, “Seb (Loeb) came with problems, we stopped, and luckily we have in the team Pablo (Moreno Huete, her co-pilot and professional mechanic), who is a McGyver of life and has repaired.”
Once Loeb resumed his march, Gutierrez and her team escorted him for the rest of the day, ensuring his safety and success. Despite losing an hour and 10 minutes, Gutierrez remained positive, saying, “We have made a great work as a team and I think we have to be proud to have passed this first part of the 48-hour stage, which was very hard.”
