McGriff unanimously to the Hall via contemporary committee

The Baseball Hall of Fame announced the results of the contemporary-era player committee vote Sunday, choosing Fred McGriff as part of the group to be inducted into the temple of immortals in Cooperstown in 2023.

McGriff, Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Don Mattingl, Dale Murphy, Rafael Palmeiro and Curt Schilling made the contemporary-era committee ticket, which included candidates whose major contributions to the game came in 1980 or later.

The Committee met during the Winter Meetings in San Diego. A candidate needed to reach 75% of the vote to be elected.

A consistent source of power throughout his 19-year career, McGriff hit 30 or more home runs in 10 seasons and drove in 100 or more runs eight times. Involved in a number of high-profile trades, McGriff played for six different teams and hit at least 30 home runs for five of them.

Three of the five All-Star trips the first baseman made were as a member of the Braves, with whom he also won the 1995 World Series.

McGriff was just seven home runs shy of the 500 homer mark and 10 hits shy of 2,500. For life, he hit .284 and posted an .886 OPS.
