McGregor Slams Khabib NFTs; Analyst Recalls Fighter’s Own Failed Memecoin

Professional fighters Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov are at the center of a cryptocurrency dispute, illustrating the broader risks and skepticism surrounding celebrity-backed digital assets amid a volatile market.

McGregor recently accused Nurmagomedov of attempting to defraud fans with a new non-fungible token (NFT) project promoted on Telegram.

The NFTs are digital “papakhas,” a traditional Dagestani hat, intended to honor Nurmagomedov’s late father.

McGregor criticized the project on X, in a post he later deleted, calling the use of his rival’s father’s name and culture for NFT sales “unacceptable.”

On-chain analyst ZachXBT swiftly countered McGregor’s accusations, reminding him of his own failed memecoin project earlier this year. ZachXBT noted McGregor launched a memecoin named REAL in April.

The REAL token project only met 39% of its fundraising goal. McGregor stated that all collected funds were returned to participants.

He attributed REAL’s failure to an unfavorable market environment, as the memecoin sector was already experiencing a rapid downturn.

ZachXBT highlighted that McGregor subsequently deleted all promotional posts about REAL, leaving investors without updates.

The memecoin market experienced an explosive surge in 2024, with projects linked to viral figures and celebrities drawing significant capital.

However, by early 2025, this enthusiasm significantly diminished. Many launches collapsed, and some were labeled scams, including initiatives linked to political figures.

The overall memecoin market capitalization recently dropped to USD $39.4 billion, marking its lowest point in 2025 and representing a USD $5 billion reduction in a single day.

Analysts suggest the future of speculative digital assets depends on developer transparency and tangible value beyond viral appeal.

The public exchange between the two fighters reignites their rivalry, this time within an industry where celebrity endorsements carry substantial reputational and financial implications for investors.
