Mayor Manuel Jiménez welcomes the election of David Ortiz

Alcalde Manuel Jiménez saluda elección de David Ortiz

The mayor of Santo Este, Manuel Jiménez, yesterday greeted the choice of David Ortiz to enter the Cooperstown Hall of Fame.

The building authority stated that Ortiz, based on the good numbers and chivalry he exhibited on the field of play in the Major Leagues, earned his election to baseball immortality.

Jiménez specified that Ortiz was able to obtain enough votes to become the fourth Dominican baseball player to achieve the honor of belonging to the Hall of Fame that brings together the cream of the best baseball in the world.

He stressed that “the Mayor’s Office of the Municipality of Santo Domingo Este” feels identified with Ortiz’s choice, which fills Dominicans with pride.

To achieve immortality in the Major Leagues, Ortiz had to compile more than 75 percent of the votes cast by the members of the jury, made up of prominent reporters linked to that sport in the United States.

Ortiz joins pitchers Juan Marichal and Pedro Martinez and outfielder Vladimir Guerrero as Cooperstown Hall of Fame Dominicans.

Considered the most complete designated hitter in baseball history, he was an All-Star ten times and won three World Series titles with the Boston Red Sox, a team he helped win in 2004, 2007 and 2013.

David compiled the best offensive records in history for a designated hitter. He finished with a .286 average, had 2,472 hits, hit 541 home runs, drove in 1,768 runs.

He won three RBI leads (2005, 2006 and 2016) and once (2006) was the AL’s leading home run producer.

Other awards obtained by Ortiz were his Most Valuable Player awards in the 2013 World Series and the American League Championship Series in 2004. He won five Silver Sluggers (2004, 2007, 2011, 2013, 2016),
