The modern football schedule keeps getting more packed. Players are pushed to their absolute limits. Now, a respected voice from the game, Mats Hummels, is speaking out. The 36-year-old German football icon, known for his smart play as a central defender, has turned commentator. He’s not holding back on his concerns about player welfare.
Hummels, still possessing the fiery spirit he showed on the field, used a recent appearance on Prime Video to tackle a growing problem. He criticized the incredibly tight schedule that now dominates world football. He feels the sport is demanding too much from its stars.
Hummels pointed out the obvious: there are more competitions than ever before. To show how serious this is, he brought up Federico Valverde. Valverde, a Uruguayan midfielder for Real Madrid, played an astonishing amount of football. In the 2024/25 season alone, he featured in 65 games for Real Madrid. On top of that, he had 15 commitments with the Uruguay national team. That’s a staggering workload for any athlete.
“Things are truly hitting their breaking point,” Hummels stated plainly. “This is a real issue football must address. We cannot have players completely worn out and squeezed dry by the calendar.” His message is clear: the current pace is simply not sustainable.
He then shared his biggest worry for the future. “I have a huge fear about what might happen in the years ahead,” Hummels explained. “Many, and I mean a great many players, will miss important games. They’ll be sidelined because they are just too physically exhausted to compete.” It’s a stark warning that the quality of the game, and the health of its heroes, hangs in the balance.
