Mateta Scores Crystal Palace Penalty Twice After VAR Disallows Double Touch

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a penalty against Manchester United on a second attempt after the initial successful shot was disallowed by VAR for an accidental “double touch.”

The French forward, 28, converted the penalty kick in the 36th minute during a Premier League match on November 30, 2025. His first attempt beat goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

However, a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) determined that Mateta had made an accidental double touch on the ball. This violation led to the initial goal being annulled.

The referee then ordered a re-take of the penalty. Mateta stepped up again and successfully scored against Lammens for a second time.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) established new guidelines in June for such situations.

Under these rules, if an accidental double touch occurs during a penalty kick that is then converted into a goal, the referee must order the penalty to be re-taken.

This regulation was clarified following a controversial penalty incident in a derby between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid.
