Martín Palermo takes on a new challenge in Platense

Martín Palermo was presented this Monday, just on his 49th birthday, as Platense’s new coach and assured that the decision was due to the “enthusiasm” generated by the Squid project.

“I was enthusiastic about the project. I will try to leave an important mark in this stage of growth of the club that has been in the First Division for two years,” said the new coach at the press conference held at the Ciudad de Vicente López stadium.

Palermo was accompanied by Pablo Bianchini, outgoing president, and by his replacement, Sebastián Ordóñez, who will officially take office next week.

“The most important thing is to continue training boys and consolidating the team in the first division,” added the Titan, who after the press conference received a cake with the Platense shield (for his birthday).

Palermo DT’s career, with a positive mark

El Calamar will be the seventh team in Palermo’s career as coach.

The former scorer retired in 2011 with the Boca shirt and just over a year later he led the destinies of Godoy Cruz. His first experience as DT lasted an entire season and left a positive balance of 14 wins, 17 draws and 13 losses. After a few months he took over at Arsenal for 2014/15 and after 11 wins, 11 draws and 17 losses he left before the tournament ended.

After almost a year inactive, he left for Unión Española de Chile, the club in which he lasted the longest to date: they were two and a half years in which he added 35 wins, 25 draws and 22 losses. His good performance earned him a pass to Pachuca in Mexico, where he spent almost a year and had 16 successes, 12 draws and 13 losses.

The Titan passed the pandemic without a club and at the end of 2020 he returned to Chile to grab Curicó Unido (four wins, six draws, 15 losses) to finally reach Aldosivi de Mar del Plata at the end of 2021. With Tiburón, Palermo surprised by taking him to the quarterfinals of this year’s League Cup but surprisingly resigned before starting the Professional League. In Aldosivi there were 12 successes, 5 draws and 10 falls.

Palermo thus arrives at Vicente López with a positive record in his 257 games as coach: 92 wins, 75 draws and 90 losses.
