Focus on the situation of the city of Marseille in terms of precariousness. Is Marseille one of the poorest largest cities in France? Elements of answers.
Marseille and its 868,277 inhabitants is the poorest city of the six largest cities in France. A quarter of the population lives with a disposable income of less than 1,000 euros per month. In 2018, the poverty rate was 26%, against 21% for the city of Nice, which is close behind the city of Marseille, followed by Toulouse, Nantes, Paris and Lyon.
Marseille also has a very high unemployment rate estimated at nearly 17% still according to INSEE, and a large share of single-parent families with more than 13%.
The catastrophic situation of some Marseille schools considered to be dilapidated is also worrying. A third of the city’s schools require heavy work, and the dilapidated state of the Marseille housing stock is often singled out with its many sleep merchants and unsanitary housing estimated at 40,000.
