“Mark? I think he will race on Ducati ”

He already warned Honda of an ultimatum from Márquez and, now, Jorge Lorenzo gives more details about what could be the immediate future of the eight-time world champion. According to the expilot, Marc’s relationship with HRC is not going through its best moment and, therefore, the Spaniard would be looking for an escape route for the coming years. The contract of him with the mark of the golden wing has end of 2024 as expiration date and the number of problems that accompany the Japanese can be reason enough to be loved by other brands that they have a motorcycle sufficiently prepared to become champion again. And that is his only objective: at the age of 30, Márquez is looking more eagerly than ever to be back in the fight for a World Cup. It would be his ninth crown, the one that puts him at the level of one of his great rivals, nothing more and nothing less than Valentino Rossi.

“The romance between Márquez and Honda is not the same,” Lorenzo revealed just a few weeks ago, analyzing a relationship in which “something has changed” in recent months. After the pre-season tests in Valencia, Marc made clear his disappointment at not seeing a breakthrough in the brand and, after asking Honda for two more steps to be able to fight for the title, a reaction from Japan could be seen that, six months later, is still not enough. They are working, but they continue without finding the key that will make them take a drastic turn in such a dramatic situation. The Kalex chassis has improved things a bit, but it’s still not enough. It makes the prototype a more stable motorcycle, with which to have a certain margin of error, although it continues to ask for improvements in braking and cornering. “It’s a little help” assumed Marc, who also confessed after the French GP that he had driven “as it had been a long time since he could”.

Even so, it is insufficient for a champion like Márquez, who also fulfilled his promise to return to one hundred percent physically and recover the level he left behind in 2019. For Jorge Lorenzo, as revealed in a talk with MotoGP.com, Marc would be close to ending his time at Honda. What would be his future? The Mallorcan is very clear: “Who would Márquez run for? I think Ducati.” And for the five-time world champion, this change would come sooner rather than later, although the offer from the Italians “will not make him very happy”. Even with those, Lorenzo reveals that Márquez “will accept it” because “after three or four years without winning, his motivation will be to win again.” At whatever price and whatever brand. In fact, the expilot is not so clear that, if so, he will do it with a main prototype from the Borgo Panigale house.

“He will race in an official or a satellite, but in Ducati”, insists the Spaniard, who trusts a level of that of Honda to face a new challenge: “He will be 31 or 32 years old and not all the riders are strong, but of course Marc Márquez is Marc Márquez”. However, with a season just beginning and another to run until the end of his contract, there is still much to see if that “love for Honda” survives the odds or ends up dying on the shore. As Lorenzo pointed out, that attachment “has ended a bit”, but only time can prove him right. And, until then, HRC will have a lot to say.
