Mário Daniel Vanishes UEFA Europa, Conference League Draw Balls

A recent UEFA ceremony delivered more than just news about upcoming football matches; it brought a touch of pure magic. Portuguese illusionist Mário Daniel took center stage. He performed a live, “poetic and unprecedented” illusion. Its goal was simple yet astounding: making the draw balls for the Europa League and Conference League disappear.

The world watched this Friday from the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. Daniel’s act was truly special. He called it “one of his most original and complex illusions” ever, especially on the technical side. “Artistically, it was also one of the most beautiful moments of my career,” Mário Daniel shared with Lusa. “It had a big poetic part, told a story, and marked the end of using those physical balls.”

Earlier, UEFA had announced big changes. The Europa League and Conference League draws would now happen together. This combined event aims to put more focus on both competitions and their teams. A new system was coming.

“No balls will be used in these two draws,” UEFA stated on its website. “Software will pick opponents for all teams at once. This follows the draw rules, including who plays at home and away.” This move marks “a new era in UEFA men’s competitions.”

During the ceremony, UEFA Deputy General Secretary Giorgio Marchetti spoke up. He explained that joining the two draws into “a special spectacle” showed how the competitions themselves are growing. “Two competitions, one stage, a celebration of European football,” he declared. “A new chapter will be written by these 72 clubs.”

Mário Daniel’s partnership with UEFA started way back in May. They worked to create a show that would powerfully end the old draw method. “The idea was to make the balls disappear in a special way,” Daniel explained. “The draw had already been a mix of physical and digital for years. But UEFA wanted to mark this change differently, so they hired us.”

His team developed a unique concept. It involved many experts from different fields. The result was “unprecedented and original technology.” Daniel remains tight-lipped about the specifics. “We can’t share many technical details,” he said. “But when I think about how to make balls vanish in a draw, without any limits, I can’t imagine a better idea than ours.”

This new technology could be useful in other entertainment areas. Daniel expects it to spark interest in the industry. He plans to use it in his upcoming shows, too.

The performance, called “The farewell of the balls / A despedida das bolas,” had its own specially composed music. Pedro Marques, known for film projects and the “Rabo de Peixe” Netflix series soundtrack, created the score. You can still catch Mário Daniel’s stunning act on official UEFA channels. It’s also available on his social media pages.
