Marileidy Paulino delivers the Tony Barreiro Games torch to the UASD rector

The rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD), Editrudis Beltrán Crisóstomo, received this Thursday the torch of the 41 Tony Barreiro Games from the hands of the Olympic and world medalist Marileidy Paulino, prior to the inauguration tomorrow Friday of the fair, dedicated to the outstanding athlete, in the ballpark of the academy.

The torch, which was taken to all campuses, centers and university subcenters, was received by the main official of the UASD on the esplanade of the building of the old rectory. The Director of Sports, Julio Gómez Soto, handed over the torch together with Marileidy.

Referring to the Olympic and world medalist in the 400-meter dash, Beltrán Crisóstomo thanked on behalf of the UASD for all the effort made by her to raise the Dominican flag, raising the pride of Dominicans.

He called the athletes who were in the place to compete with height on behalf of the oldest university in the new world and in each fair "raise to the top the pride of being a uasdiano".

He said that sport is the most beneficial form of competition "where the opponent is a colleague and even gets lost, you win since its benefit to health is scientifically validated, as well as the social and spiritual development it brings to the individual".

He stressed that the UASD is a symbol of sport and added that notable children of the Alma Mater, through the ages, "have filled with pride" to the academy with their performances in different disciplines.

The 41st version of the Tony Barreiro games bears the name of Vatú 500, honoring that sport played by the aborigines who inhabited Hispaniola, and is dedicated to the Olympic and world medalist Marileidy Paulino.

The celebration of the games is part of the commemorative activities of the 484th anniversary of the oldest university in the new world.
