Tough Win for Marcos Freitas
Freitas, ranked 98th, battled past Egypt’s Omar Assar, ranked 27th, winning 4-3. The match lasted 1 hour and 8 minutes. The scoreline was 6-11, 11-8, 10-12, 11-3, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10. Despite being 71 places lower in the rankings and being a 23rd seed, Assar didn’t dominate the game.

Marcos Freitas, 37, will play Jingkun Liang tomorrow. Liang is 5th in the rankings and beat João Geraldo 4-1 in 40 minutes. Geraldo was ranked 125th. Geraldo’s elimination follows João Monteiro and Tiago Apolónia, who lost on Saturday. This leaves Marcos Freitas as the only Portuguese male player remaining.
Women’s Draw
Jieni Shao, ranked 59th, faces Japan’s Satsuki Odo, ranked 8th, tomorrow. Odo is the seventh seed. Shao is the only Portuguese female player left after Fu Yu’s elimination on Sunday. Liang’s win over Geraldo was convincing, with a score of 11-5, 11-7, 11-3, 11-8, 11-8.
