Former Real Madrid stalwarts Marcelo and Toni Kroos recently weighed in on contemporary football talents and all-time greats, offering definitive and, at times, unexpected assessments.
Marcelo firmly stated that Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo stands above current Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior. “He is incredible, but I believe Cristiano is above everyone,” Marcelo said.
Toni Kroos, another former Real Madrid midfield maestro, concurred with Marcelo’s view. Kroos added, “Even Vinícius would choose Cristiano.”
Marcelo also offered surprising praise for Álvaro Carreras, a former Benfica player. He referenced a goal Carreras scored against Valencia on November 1.
“Didn’t you see the goal he scored recently?” Marcelo asked, indicating he did not consider himself better than Carreras.
Marcelo quickly clarified his stance on the greatest left-back, naming legendary compatriot Roberto Carlos. “That is Roberto Carlos,” Marcelo stated.
The former teammates made their comments during a Phillips initiative linked with the ‘Icon League’. They were tasked with selecting players from Real Madrid’s past and present.
