Marbella, confirmed as the venue for the Davis Cup between Spain and Romania

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has officially confirmed the Puente Romano Hotel Tennis Club in Marbella as the venue for the Davis Cup Qualifier that the Spanish MAPFRE Tennis Team will play on March 4 and 5 against Romania.

The mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, and the general director of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation (RFET), Lorenzo Martínez, held a meeting this morning to finalize details of the organization, which will have the support of the Andalusian Government, the Malaga Provincial Council, the Marbella City Council and the Andalusian Tennis Federation (FAT).

The tie will be played outdoors on a clay court, with a capacity for 4,000 spectators. Ticket sales will start at the end of this month of January. In the next few days, the purchase process and prices will be announced, which will range between €50 and €120 for tickets for the two days of competition.

Ángeles Muñoz underlined that the Davis Cup “has a great impact on tourism, the economy and the media. It is much more than a sports tournament, it reaches the heart and, in addition, Marbella has always brought good luck to the national team.”

International tribute to Manolo Santana

For his part, Lorenzo Martínez highlighted the RFET’s commitment to Marbella to pay tribute to the figure of the recently deceased Manolo Santana, closely linked to this city on the Costa del Sol.

“We are going to count on the participation of his fellow players and former Davis Cup players and national and international personalities. of the world of tennis”, he explained about the event that will be held on Saturday, March 5 on the same court of the Hotel Puente Romano Tennis Club.

At stake the ticket for the Finals

It will be the fourth time that the Davis Cup visits Marbella. He had previously done so at the Puerto Banús Bullring in 2009, and at the Puente Romano Hotel Tennis Club itself in 1989 and 2018.

The winner of the tie will qualify for the 2022 Davis Cup Finals, which will launch a new format of 16 teams divided into 4 groups in 4 venues different, from which the 8 teams that will access the final phase in a fifth venue to be designated will come out.
