The trial of seven medical professionals accused in Diego Maradona’s death continued with testimony from Pablo Dimitroff, the director of the clinic where the football legend underwent surgery 20 days before his passing. Dimitroff stated that Maradona shouldn’t have been discharged from the clinic.
Maradona’s behavior at home was described by Dimitroff as “self-destructive”. He didn’t eat properly, took unhealthy things, stayed up at night and slept during the day, and didn’t take his medication.
Clinical Concerns
Dimitroff emphasized that transferring Maradona to another facility was the only viable solution. This would have allowed him to continue his motor recovery and correct unhealthy sleep and eating habits. According to Dimitroff, sending Maradona home was a significant part of the problem given his delicate clinical state.
Dimitroff also revealed that Leopoldo Luque and Agustina Cosachov weren’t in favor of continuing Maradona’s hospital treatment. They asked Dimitroff to sedate the former football star. Two of the accused claimed Maradona was a challenging patient with several episodes of psychomotor agitation. Despite Dimitroff’s recommendation that Maradona remain under hospital observation, Luque refused, citing it wasn’t feasible.
Trial and Investigation
Maradona died on November 25, 2020, in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires. The trial, which began on March 11, will continue until July and aims to determine if there was medical negligence.
The trial focuses on whether the medical professionals were negligent in their treatment of Maradona. The testimony from Dimitroff has shed light on the circumstances surrounding Maradona’s discharge from the clinic and his subsequent death.
