Many Windows 11 crashed because of an ad

Microsoft screwed it up, and their mistake caused Windows 11 to stop working for many users.

This is precisely what happened when Microsoft decided to introduce an advertisement in Windows 11 that caused the start menu and taskbar to stop working.

Microsoft has sent an advertising notification to Windows 11 users for promove Windows 11 integration with teams, and it “broke” the operating system’s Start menu and taskbar.

Basically the ad caused the Windows desktop shell to crash, which rendered two of the main features of the operating system useless. In fact, it was nearly impossible to do anything with a Windows 11 PC.

Fortunately, Microsoft soon posted a solution to the problem and it’s very easy to apply. Applies to versions 22000.176 and 22449. Here are the steps published by the company:

  • Step 1: Use CTRL-ALT-DEL and choose to open Task Manager.
  • Step 2: Choose “More Details” at the bottom of Task Manager to expand Task Manager.
  • Step 3: Go to “File” and choose “Run New Task”.
  • Step 4: Enter “cmd” in the “Open” field.
  • Step 5: Paste the following (all in bold):
reg delete HKCU SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion IrisService / f && shutdown -r -t 0
  • Step 6: Press Enter and then your PC should restart. After rebooting, everything should return to normal.

At least Microsoft was quick to publish a solution. Hopefully, these promoted notifications won’t cause future problems for Windows 11, especially after its release on October 5th.
