Another English football season has wrapped up. While the action on the pitch grabs headlines, a new report shines a light on fan behavior. This study, shared by the Daily Mail, details which clubs saw the most arrests among their supporters during the 2024/25 campaign.
At the top of this list, Manchester United stands out with a worrying 121 fan arrests. Many of these incidents paint a clear picture of trouble. For instance, 34 of those arrests were directly tied to violent outbursts or public disorder. Almost half of United’s fan arrests happened at Old Trafford. These were during their home games, suggesting issues are not just away from home.
Beyond the general disorder, Manchester United also led the league in a specific, troubling category. A total of 27 of their fans were caught with drugs. These fans were caught with drugs as they tried to enter the stadium or once they were already inside. It highlights a particular challenge for the club regarding illicit substances.
Following United, their city rivals Manchester City came in second with 94 arrests. A significant portion of their fan issues, 59% to be exact, occurred at home matches. West Ham United rounded out the top three, accounting for 77 arrests. For the Hammers, 39% of their fan arrests were at home. Clubs like Chelsea and Aston Villa were also close behind these top three in arrest figures.
Looking at the wider picture, hate crimes were the most frequently reported offenses to authorities. These ugly incidents cropped up in about 420 games across the entire season. This tells us the problem isn’t just about a few clubs. The figures in this report cover all levels of English football. Overall, 1,932 fan arrests were made across all English leagues. This covers the entire 2024/25 season, a stark reminder that passion for the game sometimes crosses a line.
