Manchester United are already certain of the next round of the Champions League with one group game to play. The English won 2-0 at Villarreal, thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.

Donny van de Beek was given a base place at Manchester United by interim coach Michael Carrick. He played for over an hour. At Villarreal, Arnaut Danjuma returned to the basic team after being absent from the competition match against Celta de Vigo last Saturday.

Delay

The match at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Cerámica started with some delay, as referee Felix Brych couldn’t get his equipment to work.

When Brych had whistled the game eight minutes later than planned, the home team quickly took the initiative. Most of the chances were for Villarreal. It was thanks to excellent goalkeeping by David De Gea that Villarreal did not take the lead.

The best opportunity for the English to score in the first half was for Ronaldo. His header, however, went straight for Villarreal goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli.

Goalkeepers in form

Even after the break, the first big chance was for Villarreal. The ball came to Manu Trigueros’s feet via Victor Lindelöf’s back. The Spaniard lashed out, but again De Gea was the big obstacle. Not much later, Danjuma was free in the box, but his shot went well over the goal.

On the other hand, Rulli also showed that he is in good shape. Sancho hit the ball hard towards the goal, but the Argentine goalkeeper kept the ball out of the goal with his knee.

Still things went wrong for Villarreal. Ronaldo beautifully provided the redeeming opening goal twelve minutes before the end. The Portuguese took advantage of a shot in the Spanish defense and lobed the ball into the goal.

Sancho made it 2-0 in the final minutes. He popped the ball into the top corner.
