Sporting CP coach Ruben Amorim has acknowledged persistent private communication with Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe regarding a potential move, but publicly reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to his current club.
Amorim told Sky Sports in an interview published Sunday that he regularly speaks with Ratcliffe and another official identified only as “Omar,” believed to be Manchester United representatives. These discussions, he said, echo publicly stated desires for him to become Manchester United’s coach.
The Portuguese coach quoted Ratcliffe directly, stating the co-owner “is always saying he wants me here for many years,” referring to a potential tenure at Old Trafford.
Despite these high-profile overtures, Amorim insisted the communications do not lessen his intense personal pressure or change his singular focus on Sporting CP.
He emphasized that the volatile nature of football means “one game changes everything,” regardless of current support.
Amorim highlighted the importance of board backing for coaches amid external “noise,” but stressed that his primary drive stems from his own professional standards.
He stated that the pressure he puts on himself and his players remains unaffected by any words of confidence from Ratcliffe.
The Sporting CP coach, whose contract reportedly has three years remaining, added that he spent a recent break intensely reviewing his team’s games at the training center. He described feeling “frustration” after matches and is now fully prepared for the restart of the season.
