Manager Joe Maddon fired by the Anaheim Angels

The Los Angeles Angels fired manager Joe Maddon on Tuesday amid a 12-game losing streak.

Third base coach Phil Nevin will take over as interim manager when hosting Boston on Tuesday night.

Maddon compiled a 130-148 record with the Angels, who signed him prior to the 2020 season and which was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic.

Maddon was a player and coach for the Angels for three decades before embarking on a successful managerial career with Tampa Bay and with the Chicago Cubs, who ended a 108-year World Series championship drought during his stint in 2016.

After losing records in Maddon’s first two seasons, the Angels hit the ground running this season, going 27-17, until they entered a negative spiral of results. They are one loss away from matching the worst losing streak in franchise history.

Maddon is the second manager to be fired this season.

Philadelphia’s Joe Girardi was released last week, and the Phillies responded with a sweep of the Angels.
