Man Utd’s Bruno Fernandes Rejects $100M+ Saudi Offer, Prioritizes Sporting CP

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has reaffirmed his commitment to the English club, detailing how assurances from management and personal priorities outweighed a significant financial offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal ahead of his 300th appearance for the team.

Fernandes disclosed that Al Hilal had proposed an offer ranging from approximately $101.6 million to $127 million USD (80 to 100 million British pounds) for his transfer. He explicitly stated that if the club had agreed to sell him, he was not aware of it.

“The coach spoke with me. He told me that I was still part of the project, that he wanted me to stay,” Fernandes told English media. “The club said the same.”

He indicated he would have sought an exit if Manchester United had intended to sell him to strengthen the squad. “But that wasn’t the case,” Fernandes added. “I was still part of the plans; I could help the club achieve its goals. That’s what made me stay.”

Fernandes also revealed he discussed the potential move to Saudi Arabia with former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. “I spoke with him about the situation, about Arabia and everything else,” he said, noting Ronaldo’s experience was important to hear.

Fernandes reiterated that the ultimate decision rested with him and the club. He chose to remain, citing the club’s desire to reinforce the team with more players to support him.

The 29-year-old midfielder downplayed the role of finances in his career choices. “Money is important for everyone, but I’m not in a position where I need to count it or worry about the future,” he stated.

He emphasized his family’s humble background and their modest spending habits. “We like some comfort and luxury, but we are fully aware of the future we want to give our children and how we want them to grow up,” Fernandes said.

While he has a strong connection to Manchester United and the UK, Fernandes affirmed that his current goal is not to return to play in Portugal. However, he added a caveat.

“If I had the opportunity to play in Portugal again, I would always put Sporting ahead of everyone,” he confirmed, referencing his former club.

Fernandes is set to make his 300th appearance for Manchester United soon, a milestone he called a “privilege” and “honor.” He joined the club in January 2020.

“When I was a child, I just wanted to play football,” he reflected. “Now, to have the opportunity to play 300 times for this club is something I am very grateful for.”
