A massive sinkhole swallowed a motorbike in Seoul, South Korea. The rider fell in and died.
What happened
The sinkhole was 20 meters wide and 20 meters deep. It opened up on a street in the Gangdong district. This is in the east of Seoul. It happened on Monday, March 24, 2024, at around 6:30 pm.
Searching for the rider
Rescue teams looked for the rider for hours. They finally found his phone and motorbike in the sinkhole the next morning. Then, at 11:00 am, they found his body about 50 meters away from where he fell in.
How it happened
A car’s dashcam caught the moment the sinkhole appeared. The motorbike fell in, and a car in front barely avoided falling in. The car’s driver was hurt.
Cause of the sinkhole
We still don’t know why the sinkhole happened. But in the past 10 years, there have been 223 reported sinkholes in Seoul. Most were caused by poor management, old or damaged underground pipes, soil erosion, or construction accidents.
